Finding and choosing the right SEO company or consultant to best match your needs can be a little like trying to find the proverbial needle in the haystack, there are so many out there, and most normal people don’t know their robots.txt from their canonicals, so it’s not like they can carefully shop for what exactly what they need and then select the best value very easily.
It’s no wonder then that there are so many charlatans and fly-by-night organizations looking to supply SEO services, because they rarely come across informed customers and so have a good chance of getting work by using the “baffle them with bull” approach.
Similarly, normally shrewd intelligent people are also likely to be hoodwinked because to the SEO non-initiated expert SEO consulting and a chancer are probably using similar if not identical terms, and maybe even saying the same things, the main difference will often be in whether they can deliver what they say they can, or not.
Be in no doubt that good SEO takes time to both plan, assess and implement, and usually anybody saying they can produce great results in a short space of time, is either very very good, or more likely, quite the opposite.
In these days of modern internet connectivity the old rules of being near your customer or suppliers no longer apply the same way, and with many comapnies adopting the tele-working model and outsourcing, there is no reason to look for a local SEO company especially, as you may be severely limiting your chances of finding the right people by imposing a geographica cutoff point.
After all it really makes no difference at all whether you use an SEO company Switzerland, or one in Malta, Scotland or Ibiza what matters is that they do the job you need them to, for a cost you can afford. and that they don’t harm your site or your business using bad practices.
What is probably most important above all else is that they are willing and able to show examples and references for clients and sites they have worked on, and that they would be willing to let you talk to those companies or people to confirm what they say.
Be very wary of SEO companies who will not do this as it often means that they have something to hide, either less than stellar references in their capabilities department, or perhaps worse, it is not uncommon for poor SEO work to damage a website’s earning potential.
Also be wary of anybody offering guarantees about rankings, with the way search engines alter their algorithms all the time these days it is virtually impossible to guarantee anything except that they will try their very best. This si where prior references will show you whether their best was indeed good enough.
“Pay per performance” SEO can also fall under this warning as although the SEO is alleging to “take all the risk” most good SEO companies have enough work that they don’t have to offer to do it free, on a condition they may not get paid if Google doesnt play along, and this smacks possibly of slight desperation, and almost definitely implies they will just outsource, or worse, automate your work and wait for their money some months down the line.
